What is soft brew coffee?
Many people are familiar with traditional brewed coffee, but have probably never thought about why it’s called that or what the “real” difference was between regular coffee and soft-brewed coffee.
In fact, most people don’t realize there is a different way to make coffee, which removes all of the elements that come from brewing.
When you remove the flavor components from coffee, you reduce the caffeine intake. You also decrease many of the undesirable flavors that can be present in your mouth when drinking coffee.
This method has been around for decades, and over time two things happened.
One, it became more popular among health professionals and coffee drinkers. Two, it began to appear in new beverages.
These new beverages were introduced as wellness drinks. They tried to convince consumers they needed additional vitamins and minerals that vitamin C, apple juice and other fruits and vegetables were not providing them.
The problem is this — none of these substances provide any meaningful amounts of the ingredients used to prepare soft drink.
They may contain some antioxidants here and there, but then again so does orange juice. Oranges are another case where humans have been trying to improve upon nature.
It’s one thing to add beta carotene (an antioxidant found in carrots) to give yourself a nutritional boost, but it’s something else entirely to pop open a carrot and eat it.
How to make soft brew coffee
Once you have selected your preferred type of roast and ground, it is time to make some coffee. There are several different methods that can be used to make fresh coffee, including using the drip method.
The difference between the various brewing techniques is how quickly you pull the water through the grounds. With the fast infusion, such as with espresso, the milk flavor imparts itself onto the water before it goes into the cup.
With slower infusions, such as French press and traditional Turkish roasting, the flavors blend more evenly. This is why Turkish “rösti” (similar to mashed potatoes) and French pressed coffee tastes better than brewed coffee.
When to make soft brew coffee
Most coffee drinkers know that making iced coffee is great way to enjoy caffeine. But did you know you can create “soft” brewed coffee? This method removes the heat from the water, which stops the brewing process but leaves your drink with all of the flavor benefits of fresh coffee.
Soft brewing was one of the first methods for making coffee, and it’s still one of the best ways to prepare coffee today. To do this trick, just fill up an empty glass (be sure to use one that’s completely clean) and then pour in as much cold water as needed. Then simply tip the filled glass and place into the refrigerator until the water has chilled down to room temperature.
When you take the glass out of the fridge, there will be small bubbles running through the water. These are bits and pieces of ice that melted while chilling in the refrigerator. By passing a cool current through the water, you force some of the dissolved gases to come to equilibrium. In other words, you’re creating a vacuum by drawing off the liquid.
But here’s the really crazy part—the foam that you see when drinking most coffees is actually dead skin cells! They’ll eventually sink back to the bottom of the cup, but yummy stuff happens before that. After taking a sip, these remaining particles will come floating to the top.
What are the benefits of soft brew coffee?
While all types of coffee have health benefits, recent studies show that even casual drinkers prefer flavor-enhanced beverages. That’s because plain brewed coffee can taste stale or chemical-like to most people.
However, there are many advantages to making flavored coffees, such as soft brewing.
Are there any risks?
Although soft brew coffee has been around for decades, it’s still gaining popularity. Many people enjoy drinking traditional coffee, but they also like having choices.
With soft brew, you choose your roast and flavor, just as you would with normal brewed coffees. You can drink it black if you like, or add flavors to it.
It produces a richer, more balanced taste than drip or automatic brewing, without all of the added sugars. And since it doesn’t produce quite as much foam as other methods, it’s an easier beverage to clean up.
However, this does mean that you have to use more ground coffee per cup than you do with regular brewed coffee. This adds up over time, especially if you make several cups at once.
If you are worried about costs, consider buying whole bean coffee instead of grounds. That way you will only be spending $1-3 per cup to buy the bag full of beans.
Also, unlike some store bought brands, making your own soft brew is very easy. There are many different ways to make it, so even if you don’t know how to cook yet, you can learn.
And lastly, not every coffee brand makes their product using soft brew. Try several types of coffee before deciding on one that works for you.
What is hard brew coffee?
Hard-brewed or conventional coffees can be found at your local grocery store or convenience store. These are filtered through metal filters called “kads” (short for kaiser discs).
What makes conventional coffee different from espresso drinks is that it is processed more slowly. Traditional brewing methods have been around for a long time and work fairly well, though they do not produce as fast or accurate of a result as pouring water into a filter.
Conventional coffee tastes better than canned coffee because the oils within the beans react with organic compounds in the milk to give the drink flavor. The amount of oil within the bean is limited, so the brewer has to extract these flavors quickly.
Hard boil works best when you use freshly brewed water, since minerals will already have dissolved in the water. You also want to avoid adding any ingredients that might interact negatively with the caffeine content. This includes sugar and other sweeteners.
Soft-boil techniques are available but require slightly higher temperatures than boiling. Since most people enjoy the clarity soft-boiling provides, we recommend avoiding them.
What is the best type of coffee to make using soft brew?
It depends on what you are looking for in a cup of coffee. If you want a delicious, creamy drink that combines flavor from your tea with the sweet taste of coffee, the instant kind is for you.
If you are more interested in the health benefits of coffee than the taste, then the capsule style may be right for you. This method saves all the hassle of brewing by making it easy to add extra water into the bottle when you pour in the powder.
There’s no need to separate the used grounds from the beverage, as you would if you were drinking straight espresso. The amount of time between filling up the jar and pouring it into your mug allows any necessary processes (such as extracting caffeine from the beans) to happen before you take your first sip.
This way you get an almost immediate response – neither too fast nor slow. Slow processing speeds allow the flavors to meld while faster ones force you to hurry up and stop digestion so your body can start working on breaking down the caffeine.
How to choose a soft brew coffee machine
There are many different types of brewers for making soft drinks. Most require some sort of ground coffee, and most use very expensive components that only you can buy. The type of brewer they use is dependent upon your budget.
The cheap ones are made with stainless steel and ordinary people can buy them in big quantities at low prices. However, these manufacturers may not be as careful about quality controls, which means their products will have lower-quality parts and features.
When buying third-party soft drink makers, look up reviews to see who others have used successfully. If there are problems or comments indicating that other users don’t like how the manufacturer treats customers, avoid using their product.
That way, you can invest in a high-end brand instead, one that takes its customer service seriously. They usually provide higher-grade materials since they know they’ll be handling delicate beverages.
Are there any differences between coffee brands?
There are many ways to make soft drink or coffee drinks, and these methods can be applied to both types of beverages. Besides traditional soda water or coffee creamers, other ingredients that can be used to make a smooth beverage are dairy products such as milk or yogurt, fruit purees, lemon juice, coconut water, and herbs such as mint or vanilla.
However, keep in mind that over-filling a cup may not necessarily make for a good tasting beverage, since much of the carbonation is lost when the drink is fully consumed.
